Can I do my MSc at the VGSE?
No. The VGSE offers a PhD program in Economics only.
Can I apply if I hold an MBA instead of an MSc?
You should have had advanced courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics. Usually this is not the case if you followed an MBA program. Should you decide to apply, please indicate clearly where and how you have acquired the knowledge in Economics required to follow the content dealt with in PhD courses.
Can I follow your program on a part-time basis or while living abroad?
No, The VGSE offers a full-time program only. The program is constructed in such a way that you receive a fellowship and perform your research in the VGSE student offices in order to create an active research environment.
What is the difference between the first and the second application deadline?
We offer an early and a late application deadline to serve the global market of applicants for graduate programs. Most candidates apply for the early deadline and most of our fellowships are allocated during this round. Therefore we advise applicants to apply for the first deadline. Incomplete applications by the first deadline will be automatically shifted to the second deadline.
How many students are accepted each year?
We admit around four to six students per academic year.
Is the English test required?
Yes, but you can request a waiver for your English test. A waiver may be granted for reasons such as:

Is the GRE test required?
Yes. Submitting a high GRE score considerably improves your chances at being admitted. The GRE score makes it easier to compare candidates from an objective point of view. It allows us to evaluate your analytical skills. There is no restriction in the score result.
Is there an entrance test?
No. There is no entrance test. The VGSE evaluates applicants based on their application package.
Is there an application fee?
No. There is no application fee.
Are there any tuition fees?
No. There are no tuition fees for VGSE students. The student union fee of 18 Euros per semester however, has to be paid by each student.
How many recommendation letters are required?
At least two. Most applicants have two or three recommendation letters sent to us. Please note that recommendation letters should be sent by the recommenders directly to VGSE preferrable by email at email@example.com.
I will not have all the required documents by the application deadline. Can I still apply?
Yes. Depending on which documents are missing and when you will be able to submit them. Please make contact with the coordinator and inform her about it. Please also indicate this in one of the remarks fields on the application form. You may however still apply if you expect to finish your MSc or Magister before the start of the program in October.
I have not finished my Master studies. Can I apply anyway?
Yes. If you will have finished your master studies before the program starts this is not a problem. Many candidates apply in January, finish their studies in June and start in October.
Do you accept documents in other languages than English and German?
We accept application documents like certificates and recommendation letters in English and German or in an other language with a translation into English or German. Please note that your motivation letter and research proposal have to be written in English.
How is the selection interview like?
After reviewing all complete applications, shortlisted candidates will be invited for a selection interview. In this interviews three professors will ask you questions in the fields of micro, macro, and econometrics. Furthermore they would like to find out more about your motivation for doing a PhD (at the VGSE) and your intended field of research. The interview can be held face-to-face, via telephone, or via skype. The decision upon acceptance is taken shortly after the interviews.
Are courses taught in English and is there an opportunity to learn German?
Yes. All courses are taught in English. Speaking German is not required. However there is the opportunity to follow one intensive German course paid by the university.
When does the academic year start?
The program starts on the first Monday of October each year.
Is there a campus and do you help me with housing?
The University of Vienna is located in the heart of Vienna. There is no campus as such. Finding a place to stay is in the hands of the student. We can help with finding accommodation up to a certain extent.
Is there a work place for students?
All PhD students have a work place at the VGSE with the necessary facilities (PC, desk, printer etc.). You share an office with other students. We would like to maintain an active research environment at the VGSE which is why we request students to work at the office.
Do you offer financial support?
Yes. We offer three types of fellowships. Read more under fellowships.
How high are the living costs in Vienna?
You will need approximately € 1000 per month to cover all your living expenses in Vienna including housing, food, leisure time, personal expenses etc. The fellowship offered by the VGSE exceeds these costs.
